HVAC & Solar Training for Canada — Red Seal and ODP-Aligned Lab Practice

Graded diagnostic labs that support Red Seal 313A exam preparation and ODP-halocarbon card competencies — built on the same observe–test–decide–verify method used in the field.

We do not issue Red Seal endorsements, ODP cards, gas-fitting tickets, or provincial licences. Provincial authorities and Environment and Climate Change Canada issue those. We prepare you for the skills their exams test.

  • Interactive decision labs
  • Built by working technicians
  • Path-based verifiable certificate

Exam preparation

Preparing for the Canada exams?

Prepares the diagnostic judgment and refrigerant-handling decisions tested by Red Seal 313A and ODP-halocarbon card competencies, as mapped on the Canada alignment page. We do not issue Red Seal endorsements, ODP cards, or provincial licences.

Start exam-prep — sit their exam ready

Professional refresher

Already working in Canada?

Same labs, tighter time, fewer hints — score against this region. Journeypersons, service managers and energy professionals refreshing systematic diagnostic method on 120/240 V residential and 347/600 V or 208 V commercial plant at 60 Hz.

Start refresher — stay sharp on the job

Our job is that you walk into their assessment prepared to pass with flying colours. Their job is to issue the credential if you meet their standard. We do not sit or issue that exam. Prepare for Red Seal refrigeration / 313A (313D if that is the ticket) on 120/240 and 347/600 V.

Academy scores are training only. We do not issue the credential — Provincial authorities and Environment and Climate Change Canada issue the credentials. Academy completion is not authorisation to work.

Supply, frequency, and conversions

Single-phase
120/240 V split-phase
Three-phase
120/208 V and 347/600 V (277/480 V is not the Canadian default — imported US equipment only)
Frequency
60 Hz only
Code
CSA C22.1 (Canadian Electrical Code)
Conductors
AWG
Units
°C primary (CEC / Red Seal metric), kPa/bar, kg. 60 Hz only.

Temperature is measured in degrees Celsius. Gauges, ambients, and exam items on this track are °C, not Fahrenheit.

Conversion strip — reference only

Supply: V / HzTemperature: °C ↔ °FPressure: kPa ↔ bar ↔ psigMass: kg ↔ lbConductors: mm² ↔ AWG

Working decision values stay in this region's units — the strip is for translating charts and kit from elsewhere.

Marked wrong in labs

  • Treating a 347/600 V service as 277/480 V — that is a US default, not the Canadian one
  • Opening 600 V equipment as if it were 240 V
  • Quoting NEC table language where CSA C22.1 governs

Red Seal refrigeration — 313A vs 313D

The Red Seal endorsement is the interprovincial standard for refrigeration and air conditioning mechanics. In Ontario the trade splits two ways, and the difference matters before you commit to a pathway with the province.

  • The Red Seal is interprovincial — one exam, recognised in every province and territory.
  • 313A covers residential and commercial refrigeration and air conditioning; 313D is residential-only. They are not the same ticket, and this training never conflates them.
  • Our angle is graded diagnostic scenarios, not a question mill — and we are a refrigeration-focused academy, not a multi-trade exam hub.

Practice that matches the trade

Graded labs on Canadian supply — 120/240 V residential and 347/600 V commercial, 60 Hz, °C — so the readings you practise on look like the readings you will see on site.

What this region requires

The bodies that actually issue credentials in this market — and exactly what they issue. Always verify current requirements with the authority before applying.

Red Seal Program / provincial apprenticeship authorities
Skilled Trades Ontario, SkilledTradesBC, Alberta Apprenticeship and Industry Training and their counterparts run apprenticeship and certification for Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Mechanic (313A in Ontario). The Red Seal endorsement follows the interprovincial exam.
Issues: Certificate of Qualification (313A) and Red Seal endorsement
Environment and Climate Change Canada
The Federal Halocarbon Regulations, 2022 require an ODP-halocarbon card for handling controlled halocarbon refrigerants. Provinces administer their own card programs (for example the BC ODP card via HRAI/ECCC).
Issues: ODP-halocarbon card (federal and provincial programs)
Provincial gas authorities
TSSA in Ontario, Technical Safety BC and their counterparts license gas work. Gas Fitter 1/2 tickets are required for gas-fired equipment and are entirely separate from refrigeration credentials.
Issues: Gas Fitter licences — a separate scheme we do not train for
Provincial electrical safety authorities
ESA in Ontario, Technical Safety BC and their counterparts regulate electrical work. Solar PV installation generally requires licensed-electrician involvement and is a separate scope from this training.
Issues: Electrical licences — solar work sits under these, not under RAC credentials

Academy lab → Canada requirement

What each lab honestly supports, and what only the authority can issue. Lab links go to the real lab pages — the free ones are playable without an account.

  • Residential cooling diagnosis

    Residential No-Cool (free lab)

Supports: Red Seal 313A exam prep — refrigeration-cycle diagnosis under time pressure

Does not replace: The Red Seal 313A examination

  • Refrigerant recovery & charging discipline

    Residential Over- and Undercharge

Labs that already transfer

Every graded lab in the library teaches jurisdiction-neutral diagnostic method — physics, measurement and decision sequence travel across borders. Free labs are playable now without an account; the rest open with HVAC Technical Training — Paths A–D.

Gaps we are filling next

  • A2L / low-GWP refrigerant depth — more labs covering flammable and low-GWP refrigerant handling beyond the current safe-handling decisions.
  • Commercial refrigeration & RTU labs — the commercial library is growing; rack and CO2 work beyond the current labs is not covered yet.
  • Commissioning & documentation — more start-up, handover and documentation scenarios beyond the RTU first start-up lab.

Who this is for

  • Apprentices preparing to challenge the 313A provincial exam and the Red Seal interprovincial exam.
  • Journeypersons refreshing systematic diagnostic method after time away from service work.
  • Career changers building foundational diagnostic skill before writing provincial exams.
