Section by section
Array and mounting
- Wash modules early morning or late evening — never on a hot array
- Check for dust cementing after long dry spells in Turkana, Garissa and Kajiado
- Inspect for shading from new construction, growing trees and rooftop water tanks
- Check rail clamps and roof penetrations after the long rains
- Look for hotspots, delamination, snail trails and cracked backsheets
- Confirm module earthing and bonding continuity
DC side
- Isolate and prove dead before opening any DC combiner
- Record open-circuit voltage per string and compare against the commissioning sheet
- Record operating current per string at a stated irradiance and time
- Check fuse and surge-protection status indicators
- Inspect MC4 connectors for corrosion — coastal Mombasa and Kilifi sites first
- Check cable supports, UV damage and rodent damage in roof voids
Battery and inverter
- Log battery voltage, state of charge and cell or module balance
- Check ventilation and ambient temperature of the battery room
- Torque-check terminals to the manufacturer figure and record it
- Download inverter event and fault logs before clearing anything
- Confirm firmware version and charge parameters against the design
- Test generator or grid changeover behaviour under load where fitted
AC side and records
- Verify earthing, bonding and earth resistance readings
- Test RCD or RCBO trip behaviour where fitted
- Check labelling, warning signage and isolation points are legible
- Confirm the KPLC connection and metering arrangement is unchanged on grid-tied sites
- Record actual measured values, not ticks — with date, technician and photos
- Issue the client a signed service report and store it against the job
Record values, not ticks
String Voc, insulation resistance, battery voltage and temperature mean something a tick never will when the same site calls back.
The reading is only as trustworthy as the meter and the range used. Record both.
Soiling, corrosion and cable damage are arguments you win with a dated photo.
Isolate and prove dead before any intrusive check. An unsafe method fails the visit, whatever else was done.
A signed summary with values and recommendations is what turns a service call into a maintenance contract.

Maintenance questions
How often should solar systems be serviced in Kenya?+
Plan a full service twice a year for most residential systems, quarterly on dusty sites and commercial installations, and an extra visual check immediately after the long rains and after any major storm.
How often should panels be cleaned?+
It depends on soiling, not the calendar. Sites near murram roads, quarries or construction lose noticeable output within weeks, while a clean coastal roof may hold up for months. Cleaning triggered by measured output loss beats cleaning by habit.
What is different about maintaining batteries in Kenyan conditions?+
Heat. Enclosure temperature is the single biggest driver of shortened battery life in poorly ventilated stores and roof spaces, so record ambient and enclosure temperature alongside voltage and state of charge.
Does frequent KPLC switching damage the system?+
It stresses changeover behaviour and cycles batteries harder than the design may assume. Test changeover deliberately on every visit rather than assuming it still works because nobody complained.
Can I use this checklist in my own service business?+
