How to Prepare for the EPRA Solar PV Technician Practical Assessment (T1 & T2)

Most candidates do not fail on knowledge. They fail on method under observation — the order they check things in, and what they touch before it is proven dead.

Kenyan technicians rarely fail a solar practical because they do not know what a bypass diode is. They fail because, under observation, the order of their work falls apart: a meter used without being proved, a DC conductor handled on the assumption that the AC breaker did something, a measurement taken correctly but recorded in a way nobody could audit.

This guide describes how to prepare for that reality. It is professional guidance, not a substitute for EPRA's published requirements. Confirm the current format, scope and licensing route directly with EPRA before you apply.

Know which class you are actually preparing for

The licence classes describe scope, and scope decides what an assessor can reasonably ask you to do. Broadly:

  • T1 — small standalone DC systems. Solar home systems and DC lighting. The judgment being tested is safe isolation, correct DC-side sizing, and commissioning evidence somebody else could check.
  • T2 — medium systems with inverters and batteries. Now AC and DC hazards coexist and storage holds energy independently of sun or grid. Diagnosis has to separate a module problem from a controller problem from a battery problem.
  • T3 — grid-tied and hybrid. Interconnection procedure, protection behaviour, monitoring and documentation carry as much weight as the physical build.

Preparing for T2 with a T1 mental model is the most common structural mistake. The moment storage enters the system, "switch it off" stops being a meaningful instruction.

What is actually being marked

Assume every assessor is marking four things at once, whatever the task in front of you:

  • Safety method. Did you identify every energy source before touching anything? Did you isolate in the manufacturer's order, lock it, and prove dead with an instrument you proved first?
  • Measurement validity. The right instrument, the right range, the right two points, and an understanding of what the reading would look like if the system were healthy.
  • Workmanship. Terminations, torque, conductor support, weatherproofing, mechanical fixing. Work that survives a season, not a photograph.
  • Reasoning out loud. Why this check, why now, why not the other one. Silence reads as guessing even when you are right.

The mistakes that cost marks

  • Opening the AC breaker and treating the array as dead. Modules produce voltage in daylight.
  • Skipping the prove-instrument step because the isolation was done ten minutes ago.
  • Ignoring the manufacturer's storage shutdown order because the system "looks off".
  • Swapping a component before the measurement that would have confirmed the fault.
  • Recording a result without the conditions — irradiance, temperature, time — that make it mean anything.
  • Working faster when watched. Assessors read speed without method as risk.

A rehearsal method that works

Preparation should look like the assessment, not like revision. Four weeks out, work like this:

  • Fix one isolation routine and never vary it. Same order, same proving, same photographs, on every system including the ones you are only "looking at".
  • Rehearse faults, not facts. For each symptom you can name, write down the first three checks in order and what each result would rule out. If you cannot write the order, you do not have it yet.
  • Get marked on the decisions. Graded scenarios that fail you outright for a safety-critical error teach faster than a score that averages one away.
  • Write the paperwork every time. Commissioning sheet and service report, filled in as if a utility or an insurer will read them, because eventually one will.
  • Practise narrating. Say your reasoning aloud while working alone so it is normal when someone is watching.

Physical training gives you hands on real equipment, and nothing replaces that. What it rarely gives you is repetition of the decision: you meet the faults that happened to be on the bench that week.
