The sheet order, and what each sheet resolves

M0 — legend, symbols and general notes

Read this sheet first, every time. The legend defines what every line weight, hatch and abbreviation means on this specific project, and the general notes carry requirements that never appear on the plan views.

M1+ — floor plans

Equipment locations, duct routing, diffuser placement and zone boundaries. Plans tell you where; they rarely tell you how much.

Schedules

Equipment capacities, airflows, electrical characteristics, filter sizes and accessories. This is where the actual numbers live.

Details

Curbs, hangers, seismic restraint, condensate traps and piping arrangements drawn at large scale. Details override plan views when they conflict.

Controls and sequences

The written sequence of operation. If you only read one thing before commissioning, read this.

Symbols, abbreviations and callouts

  • Supply, return, exhaust and outside air are distinguished by line type and hatch, not by labels alone — check the legend before assuming.
  • Duct callouts read width x depth in the direction shown; a 24x12 is not the same duct as a 12x24 when it turns.
  • Diffuser tags carry both the type mark and the CFM; the type mark points back to the air-device schedule.
  • Refrigerant, condensate, hydronic supply and hydronic return each have their own line convention.
  • Elevation and section markers tell you which detail sheet resolves a congested area.
  • Cloud and delta marks flag revisions — always work from the latest revision date in the title block.

Equipment schedules — where the real numbers live

Capacity and airflow

Nominal tons or MBH plus design CFM. Compare against the ESP the fan is scheduled at — an undersized ESP is where field airflow problems begin.

External static pressure

Scheduled ESP is a design assumption. If the installed duct is longer or more restrictive, the unit will never make the airflow on the schedule.

Electrical characteristics

Voltage, phase, MCA and MOCP. Confirm these against the panel schedule and the disconnect actually installed.

Filters and accessories

Filter size and MERV, economizer, power exhaust, smoke detectors, curb type and adapter requirements.

Controls interface

Thermostat, DDC or BAS point list. Missing points here become change orders at commissioning.

Sequencing the work

  • New construction: rough-in follows structure and above-ceiling trades. Get your hangers and mains in before the ceiling grid closes.
  • Remodel: existing conditions rule. Verify what is actually there before ordering anything from the drawings.
  • Curbs and roof penetrations coordinate with roofing, not with your equipment delivery date.
  • Power and controls need the electrician on site at start-up, not the week after.
  • Duct pressure testing and cleaning happen before ceilings close, not after.
  • Commissioning is scheduled work with its own duration — not the last hour of the last day.

What is missing on these drawings?

Run this checklist on every set before you price or install anything. Each item below is a question you ask in writing, today, not a problem you discover on the roof.

  • No external static pressure listed for the scheduled fan, or an ESP that clearly does not match the drawn duct run.
  • Equipment shown on plan but absent from the schedule, or scheduled with a mark that appears nowhere on the plan.
  • Condensate routing shown to a wall and no further — no termination, no trap detail, no pitch.
  • Outside air quantities given with no path shown for how that air reaches the unit.
  • Roof equipment with no curb detail, no adapter, and no structural note about the load.
  • A controls sequence that names points the schedule does not include.
  • Duct sizes that change with no transition detail at a beam or congested crossing.
  • Revision clouds with no matching revision note in the title block.

United States

South Africa
Aligns with safe-handling expectations under SAQCC Gas / SARACCA pathways. We prepare; SAQCC Gas issues the authorisation.
Kenya / East Africa
Supports good-servicing practice and RAC technician competence relevant to NITA / EPRA-adjacent work. Official authorisations remain with the relevant bodies.

Aligns with ESSCI RAC Service Technician (NSQF) and HPMP Good Servicing Practices orientation. ESSCI and the Ozone Cell issue official credentials.
