Running the Service Leadership in the Energy Transition session

1. Purpose

The energy landscape is shifting from centralized grids to distributed solar, storage and virtual power plants. This session exists to make one argument concrete: the technology is advancing, and the differentiator is leadership that serves — community and reliability first, knowledge shared across borders, solutions designed for prosumers, utilities and the wider public, and enough trust for policy, technology and people to move together.

This module is designed as part of a broader Service Leadership and energy transition curriculum. It can be used on its own or dropped into leadership development, energy management, sustainability or professional development programmes.

This is a leadership and professional development module. It does not confer a licence, certification or regulatory authority in any country.

2. Session length

  • 60–90 minutes. One regional lens, core questions, short action plan. Works as a team session, conference slot or virtual workshop.
  • Half day (about 4 hours). Two regional rotations, community and cooperative models, structured cross-regional exchange and paired action planning.

3. Learning objectives

  1. Describe how the shift from centralized generation to distributed solar, storage and virtual power plants changes what leadership is being asked to do.
  2. Apply four service-leadership principles — reliability first, knowledge sharing, designing for all parties, and trust-building — to a decision in your own market.
  3. Compare how net metering, tariffs, utility relationships and community energy models differ across Kenya and East Africa, the United States and Australia.
  4. Evaluate community solar and cooperative models against shared generation, shared governance and shared benefit.
  5. Identify where policy, technology and community are out of step in your region, and name one action that narrows the gap.
  6. Produce a short, specific action plan you can start within 30 days.

4. Session flow — 60 to 90 minutes

5. Session flow — half day

6. Using the regional pages

Each regional page is a worksheet: context blocks to read, three questions to discuss, and four actions to choose from.

  1. Assign each group the region they work in, or the dominant region in the room.
  2. Give ten minutes to read the context blocks and mark the one that is most true for them.
  3. Run the three regional discussion questions — fifteen minutes, one scribe per group.
  4. Ask each group to pick exactly one practical action, not several.
  5. In mixed groups, rotate once so everybody also reads a region they do not work in.

7. Discussion questions

Core

  1. Where in your market is the technology already ahead of the rules — and who is carrying the risk of that gap right now?
  2. Name one piece of knowledge your organisation holds that another region would benefit from. What stops you sharing it?
  3. Whose interests are easiest to ignore in your current decisions: the prosumer, the utility, or the wider public who never installed anything?
  4. What would have to be true for a customer, a regulator and a network operator to all describe your organisation as trustworthy?

Kenya & East Africa

  1. Where does your organisation currently over-promise on net metering or export value, and what would an honest version of that conversation sound like?
  2. What one piece of information would make your local utility's job easier — and what stops you sending it today?
  3. For a community or mini-grid system your team has touched: who pays for maintenance in year three, and who decides?

United States

  1. Which claim does your team repeat that is only true in some states — and how would you make it accurate everywhere you operate?
  2. If your utility contact described your submissions in one word, what would it be, and what would you need to change to improve it?
  3. For a VPP or storage customer: can they explain, in their own words, when their battery gets used and what they get for it?

Australia

  1. How does your team handle a customer whose feed-in tariff has dropped sharply since installation — is there a defined conversation, or does it depend on who takes the call?
  2. What proportion of your recent systems were commissioned with self-consumption actually configured, rather than just connected and exporting?
  3. If a network operator audited your last twenty inverter settings, what would they find?

Asia

  1. Which assumption in your current pipeline would break if the rules changed next quarter, and who would carry that cost?
  2. For your commercial and industrial customers: can you state what your service actually protects — cost, uptime, or compliance — and do they agree?
  3. On your most remote site, what happens when a component fails and the nearest competent technician is a day away?

South America

  1. How does your team explain the difference between what an early-connected customer receives and what a new customer will receive today?
  2. If the next dry year raises prices and pressure on reliability, what would your customers expect from you that you are not currently ready to deliver?
  3. For any cooperative or community scheme you work with: is maintenance funded and governed on paper, or only in conversation?

8. Facilitation tips

Mixed regional groups

Never let one market's assumptions become the default. Ask each region to state its own conditions before any comparison, and stop generalisations early — including your own.

Vocabulary

Net metering, feed-in tariff, prosumer and community solar mean materially different things by market. Define terms as they arise; the misunderstanding is usually definitional, not substantive.

Seniority in the room

Where owners and field supervisors are mixed, take answers from the field first. Reversing the usual order changes what gets said.

Virtual delivery

Use breakout rooms for the regional segment with one prompt visible per room, keep groups to four or five, and have every group write into one shared document so the report-back is already captured.

In-person delivery

Print the regional pages as worksheets, put one region per table, and rotate participants once so nobody only discusses their own market.

Keeping it honest

The session works when people name a real gap in their own practice. Model that yourself early with a concrete example, or you will get agreement instead of learning.

9. Reflection and action planning

Fifteen minutes individually, then five minutes in pairs to challenge each plan for specificity.

  1. One thing I will stop saying or promising, because it is not accurate in my market.
  2. One piece of knowledge I will share outside my organisation, and who I will send it to.
  3. One group whose interests I have been under-weighting, and how I will bring them into the next decision.
  4. One action I will complete within 30 days — with a first step and a date.

The pair check is three questions: is it specific, is it dated, and is it yours to do without anyone else's permission? If the answer to any is no, rewrite it.

10. Closing and next steps

  1. Each participant reads one commitment aloud — a sentence, not a speech.
  2. Agree one shared practice the group will adopt for knowledge sharing.
  3. Set a follow-up date to check what actually happened, ideally within six weeks.
  4. Point service companies running field teams to the operational Service Leadership pilot for standards, placement, supervision and callback reduction inside EcoService OS.
