Australia has the highest rooftop solar penetration in the world, which means it reached the problems of abundance first: midday export saturation, minimum demand and voltage management. The leadership question has shifted from how to install more to how to make what is installed useful.

Feed-in tariffs and the end of export economics
Export credits have fallen far from early levels, and export limits or two-way tariffs apply in more networks. Customers who bought on an export-driven payback need an honest reset conversation rather than a repeat of the original pitch.
Self-consumption as the new value story
Value now comes from using generation on site: load shifting, hot water and pool timing, EV charging schedules, and controls that respond to the tariff. That is a service and commissioning conversation, not a hardware upsell.
Batteries and orchestration
Storage changes payback, resilience and grid participation at once. Overstating any of the three damages trust. Being precise about backup scope — what actually stays on during an outage, and for how long — is the single most useful honesty in the sales conversation.
Grid stability and minimum demand
Voltage rise, inverter compliance settings and emergency backstop mechanisms exist because distributed generation now materially shapes network behaviour. Correctly configured, compliant inverters are a public-good contribution, not paperwork.

- Add a self-consumption configuration step — loads, timing, controls — to your commissioning checklist so it cannot be skipped.
- Write a clear backup-scope statement for every battery quote: what runs, for how long, and what does not.
- Spot-check inverter compliance settings across recent installations and correct any drift before it becomes a network issue.
