What drives boat maintenance costs
Length and hull type. Almost every yard service — haul-out, pressure wash, bottom paint, shrink wrap, storage — is quoted per foot. Catamarans pay more because of the extra wetted surface, while sailboats spend less on propulsion service and more on rigging and sails.
Engine hours. Oil, impellers, filters, belts, anodes and injector service all follow hour-based intervals. A charter boat running 600 hours a year hits the same service items three or four times more often than a weekend cruiser.
Age and condition. After roughly ten years, hoses, wiring, pumps, canvas and electronics start failing on their own schedule. The calculator adds 2% of labor per year of age to reflect that curve.
Labor rate and DIY share. Marine shop rates vary widely by region. Owners who handle their own washing, waxing, zincs and oil changes can remove a meaningful share of the labor line — parts, paint, haul-out and storage stay.
