Send two competent technicians to the same fault with the same instruments and you will often get two different outcomes. Usually the difference is not knowledge. Both know what a healthy string voltage looks like. The difference is how the call was structured, which check was chosen first, and what was written down at the end.
Those two things — diagnostic judgment and operational discipline — are the skills that separate technicians over a career. They are also the two that are least often taught explicitly.
Judgment is choosing the check that eliminates the most
Diagnosis is not a search for the fault. It is a sequence of decisions that shrink the space the fault could be in. A good first check is not the easiest one or the one nearest the van; it is the one whose result rules out the largest number of possibilities regardless of which way it goes.
Take a system reported as underproducing. Measuring one string's open-circuit voltage tells you about that string. Reading the inverter's fault history with timestamps against the last week's weather tells you whether the problem is continuous, intermittent, temperature-related, or grid-related — and that single reading typically eliminates more than half the candidate causes. Same time cost, very different information yield.

Parts-swapping is a method that stopped working
Substitution used to be a legitimate diagnostic technique when components were cheap and simple. On modern equipment it fails on three counts. Components are expensive enough that a wrong swap wipes out the margin on several jobs. Many faults are conditional, so a replacement appears to fix a problem that returns in different weather. And manufacturers increasingly require evidence of the fault before honouring a warranty — a swapped part with no supporting measurement is a cost you absorb.
The discipline that replaces it is simple to state and hard to hold under time pressure: prove the fault before you act on it, and verify the fix before you leave.
Documentation is a technical skill, not admin
A measurement without its conditions is not data. "String 2 reading 310 V" means nothing on its own; "String 2, 310 V open-circuit at 09:40, overcast, 12 °C ambient, expected 345 V at STC-corrected conditions" is evidence. The first cannot be compared to anything. The second supports a warranty claim, a second visit by a different technician, and a conversation with a customer about whether to repair or replace.
The same applies to photographs. A nameplate shot, a termination shot before and after, and a shot of the fault screen with a timestamp are worth more than a written paragraph, and they take fifteen seconds. Technicians who do this consistently find that disputes largely stop happening to them.
Sequence discipline: run the call in the same order every time
Judgment performs better inside a fixed structure. Arrival and site context, safety and isolation, evidence capture, problem narrowing, decision, action, verification, handover. Running the same order on every call frees attention for the part that actually needs thinking, and it makes the gaps obvious — you notice when you have skipped verification because the shape of the call is familiar.
